PHONETICS:
Phonetics is the study of speech
sound and their articulation.
In English there are 26 letters (Alphabets)they are divided into 2
groups.- Vowels:- 5 in number(a, e, i, o, u)
- Consonants :- 21 in number(b, c, d, ……z)
PHONEME:
Phoneme is the study of speech sounds
and their articulation.
PHONETIC ALPHABET:
Phonetic
alphabet is the symbol which is used to represent a phoneme or speech sounds.
It is always written in between 2 slashes. Ex: (/bæd/)
PHONETIC
TRANSCRIPTION:
Phonetic transcription is the method of representing each
phoneme with phonetic alphabet or each speech sound with a symbol.
There are 44 phonetic alphabets in English.
They are divided into 2 groups namely
i.
Phonetic

Consonants(24)
Phonetic

A
Consonant is a sound which is produced with or without the vibration of vocal
cords. A Consonant is a voiced or voiceless sound.

THE SYMBOLS OF 20 VOWEL SOUNDS:
A vowel is a voice sound.
It is formed by the position of tongue and lips in such a way that breathe can
escape freely.
The
20 vowel sounds in phonetics have been divided into 2 groups.
MONOPHTHONGS:
The vowels
which have only one sound are called Monophthongs or pure vowels or simple vowels.
They are 12 n numbers (7 short vowels and 5 long vowels).
The Monophthongs are listed below:
DIPHTHONGS:
The
vowels which have two vowel sounds are called Diphthongs or gliding vowels. It
means beginning with one vowel sound and ending with the other vowel sound they
are 8 in number. These can be divided into 3 groups .They are:
